Do you have unresolved back pain, particularly in the lower region?
Have you gained initial relief, only to find after few days, your discomfort returns?
Maybe you’ve been involved in a road traffic incident, even if it was several years ago and encountered whiplash?
How about dental work, particularly extractions, root canals, wisdom teeth removed? You could also be curious about any kind of head injuries that may have occurred, even if it was many years ago?
With any or all of the above that may resonate with your experience through life, it could be that your treatment plan for recovery is requiring a little extra ‘je ne sais quoi’…
In this information, I aim to create a simple understanding of why your back pain could be potentially be initiated from somewhere else on the body
In CranioSacral Therapy (CST), and osteopathy, there is a line of thought that the head and pelvis need to be aligned.
Any kind of trauma to the mouth/head can knock the head off balance.
Without being too technical; a bone called the sphenoid, is in contact with all of the bones of the skull. You would call it the temples and is the dimple at the side of the eyes. It is one bone and passes right through the skull and is influenced by its relationship with its environment and has slight movement. The eyes sit in this bone and need to be level, a bit like a spirit level for balance. The upper teeth/palate also have contact with this bone
Because the head and pelvis are two ends of the spectrum of the spine, the alignment is important for the healthy spine. So any issues at the head level, will need the pelvis/hips/legs to compensate, causing spine issues.
This is where craniosacral (CST) is different in its approach. The application of mobilisation of the oral cavity can release any held tensions/strains, not only in the head and mouth, but also help to support the alignment of the pelvis and hence your spine health. Working in and around the mouth can also be applied for migraines, TMJ, anxiety, whiplash, hormonal support, neck strain, dental trauma and many other physical/emotional issues.
